Tanzania is a more layered safari destination than Kenya — partly because the Great Migration spends most of the year inside the Serengeti, partly because Ngorongoro and Tarangire each peak in different months. Picking the right window depends on what you’re after.
The short answer
For the calving season: late January through mid-March (southern Serengeti / Ndutu).
For the Mara River crossings: late August through October (northern Serengeti).
For Tarangire’s elephant herds: July through October.
For value with great game: November or June.
The dry seasons (June–October & January–February)
June – October
Tanzania’s peak. Cool, dry, predictable. Animals concentrate around water. The migration is in the western and northern Serengeti from June, hitting the Mara River crossings from late August. Tarangire fills with elephants drawn to the river, and the Ngorongoro Crater is a postcard year-round but particularly clear and dustless in this window. Book 6–9 months ahead for August / early September.
January – February — calving
The southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains turn into a vast nursery. Roughly 500,000 wildebeest calves are born in a three-week window in February. The predator action is the highest of the year — lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and jackals all capitalise. This is also the best photography light of the year (clean air after the short rains). Lodges sell out aggressively for the calving window.
The rainy seasons
April – May (long rains)
Heaviest of the year. Many lodges close in the southern circuit. Northern circuit lodges stay open and offer the year’s lowest rates. Game viewing is still good in the Serengeti — the herds are moving north — but rain can disrupt drives. Best for budget travellers and birders.
November – mid-December (short rains)
Lighter and more predictable than the long rains. Most lodges open. Excellent value, green landscapes, and the herds returning south through the eastern Serengeti. A great compromise window.
Park-by-park summary
- Serengeti: Year-round destination — the herds simply move within it. Just match where you stay to where they are that month.
- Ngorongoro Crater: Excellent year-round; clearest views June–October.
- Tarangire: Best in the dry season (June–October), when elephant herds gather along the river.
- Lake Manyara: Best in the wet season (November–February) when flamingos return and the lake is full.
- Zanzibar: Best as a beach extension in June–October or December–February. Avoid April–May (long rains).
How long do you need?
For a meaningful Tanzania safari, plan a minimum of 6 nights on the ground: 2 in the Ngorongoro / Karatu area, 3–4 in the Serengeti, and ideally a couple of beach nights in Zanzibar to decompress.
